Either a suitcase or a backpack is suitable as luggage. Rotterdam has extremely changeable weather. It can be overcast, sunny and rainy on the same day.
A long coat and an umbrella should be packed as it very often rains and there are strong winds. If participating in the dace parade, body paints are a necessity. Some sun tan lotion should be packed for sunny weather.
A waterproof bag to keep your belongings dry during sudden rainstorms is useful and it can also be used for photo equipment and other accessories such as films and batteries.
There are a number of outdoor activities to indulge in, so, beachwear, sunscreen lotion, and sunglasses would be ideal especially in the summer.
One can get medicines for stomach aches, headaches and other common ailments at the local chemist shops, however, for specific problems, it is better to carry your own medicines.
