The Euro is the official currency of Utrecht. Traveller’s cheques are safe and a handy alternative to cash. Banks are closed on weekends. The city also has many ATM machines. Credit cards are also accepted in most shops.
Tipping is not encouraged in the city as VAT and services charges are included in the bills of hotels, shops, taxis and even restaurants.
Smoking is not allowed in public places but separate smoking areas are available. You may bring your pet to the city, but you need to have proper documents. The allowable level alcohol in the blood is 0.5 per mill.
Presents are unwrapped immediately when received. Returning gifts is not the custom here. Do not miss out on the fabulous and informative museums in the city.
The official language is Dutch but the vast majority of the inhabitants also speak English, French and German.
