Museum of Norwegian Knitting Industry
Underwear, socks and warm sweaters were the main goods produced at Salhus Tricotagefabrik. The knitting mill was established in 1859, during the first period of industrialisation in Norway, and was the first modern, Norwegian knitwear plant. As a result of this establishment an entire community grew in the little village with bakeries, various stores, shoemakers, blacksmiths, a doctor, a bank, a post office, a nursing home, lodges and an assembly building.
Today Salhus is resembles an open-air museum with buildings from the whole industrial period, from the 1860´s to the 1950´s.
