Fredrikstad can be described as a city as well as municipality located in ‘Ostfold County, Norway’. Fredrikstad was discovered in the year 1567 by none other than ‘King Fredrik II’. It obtained the status of a ‘municipality’ on 1st of January, 1838. Glemenn, one of the rural municipalities got merged with this city on the 1st day of the year in the year 1964. Borge, Rolvsoy, Krakeroy, and Onsay got merged with ‘Fredrikstad’ on 1st of January, 1994.
The above-mentioned city goes on to straddle ‘river Glomma’ wherein it happens to meet Skagerrak. Fredrikstad is the 5th biggest city all over Norway; if combined with Sarpaborg, its neighbor.
The population of these two municipalities was recorded to be 123029 as per census conducted in the year 2008. Fredrikstad was known for having a huge sawmill industry. Moreover, it was an essential harbor with regards to timber export. Later on, it was used for shipbuilding, till main yard got closed in 1980s.
