With historic collections from all over the world, Oslo’s Norsk Folkemuseum is the largest museum of cultural history in Norway. Founded in 1894, the museum illustrates how people lived in Norway from the early 16th century until present day.

Norsk Folkemuseum has 155 buildings, which are all part of its open-air experience. Each building represents a different time period in Norwegian history, and the displays make clear distinctions between town and country life, as well as the divisions between the different social and economic classes. The contemporary history is presented through exhibitions and documentation projects focusing especially on children, youth and the multicultural population.

The museum offers permanent exhibitions as well as temporary displays throughout the year. The permanent indoor exhibitions include folk costumes, folk art, and traditional Norwegian children’s toys. Norsk Folkemuseum has 120 extremely knowledgeable and helpful employees that will make sure you get the most accurate portrayal of Norwegian culture and history. The museum is open to the public 360 days a year, and operates from 10 am to 6 pm. The Norsk Folkemuseum will be sure to fill you in on everything you wanted to know about Norway’s upbringing.
