Reviews Uranienborg
Uranienborg
Located in the Frogner borough of Oslo, Norway, Uranienborg was originally a farmland area with an excellent view of the city. The area was integrated into Oslo's territory in the mid-19th century, and these days the area is renowned for its natural beauty as well as its interesting monuments and memorials. Because the area was so popular for its view, Uranienborg was named after the famous Uraniborg astronomic observatory in Sweden.
One of the must-visit places in the area is Uranienborg Park, as it offers 17 acres of beautiful hilly land perfect for jogging, playing sports, or having a picnic. In the park is a statue of Hans Nielsen Hauge, a famous 18th-century revivalist, who was a key player in the political and religious history of Norway. The park is also home to Uranienborg Church, which is right behind the Royal Palace of Oslo. The church is a neo-Gothic building, with beautiful architectural nuances and an interior decorated with ancient frescoes by famous artist Martin Enevold Thømt.
Uranienborg is accessible by the Briskeby Line (a section of Oslo's Tramway), and is a great place to go for a low-key afternoon visit. Definitely check out the church if you are an art history enthusiast with an affinity for stained glass and unique edifices.
