The Arctic Cathedral is only a few years old and is a modern looking structure huge stain glass windows and crystal chandeliers are its outstanding features. The Polar Museum is housed within a cluster of wooden buildings. The displays consist of tools and other articles of daily use of the people of this region; photographs reflect the tough living conditions of the area. The Tromso University Museum is an old scientific institution which contains displays covering various fields like geology, archaeology, botany, etc.
Tromso is the best place in Norway to view the uniquely polar phenomenon the Northern Lights. Also, there are several hiking trails in the mountains and plateaus in the surrounding region.
The Bukta–Tromso Open Air Festival is an annual musical fest held in July. The Tromso International Film Festival held in winter is the largest of its kind in Norway.
