Katowice: Attractions and more...

Katowice is a modern city, developed mainly in the 19th and early 20th centuries. It is home to the Silesian Philharmonic Orchestra, which gave its opening performance on 26th May 1945, and the Silesian Quartet, established in 1978. The Stanislaw Wyspianski theatre, established in 1907, is the largest drama theatre in the Upper Silesia. It presents performances of Polish and international plays, and attracts some of Poland’s best directors and stage-managers.

The city also boasts a number of museums and galleries, including the Silesian Museum, combining modern art and displays depicting Silesian culture and scenery, and the BWA Modern Art Gallery, which exhibits works by Polish and international artists, as well as organising various poster and graphic art competitions.

Nearby, the nature reserves of Ochojec and Las Murckowski preserve numerous plant and animal species of the region. Excursions into the surrounding areas also reward visitors with views of original miners’ cottages and opportunities to enjoy the remaining forests.
