Kazimierz the Jewish District is easily accessible from Wawel Hill and forms a part of the city centre of Krakow.

It was once an independent city but today it is a neighbouring district to central Krakow.

The district echoes the tale of the Polish Jews. There are abundant Synagogues and Kirkuts (Jewish Cemeteries) all around the district.

Its streets are narrow with many small markets and apartments. Kazimierz was deserted following the tragedy of World War II, when Jews were exterminated by the Nazi invading forces.

The ruins of Kazimierz have experienced a steady growth since 1980, as the Jews who were moved out started to regain their lost property and heirs of previous inhabitants started renovation work.

Today Kazimierz is Krakow’s centre for artistic and intellectual tumult. The famous movie Schindler’s List was shot here.

There is a Jewish Cultural Festival that is held here every year, displaying Jewish arts and crafts. The district of Podgorze still holds the remnants of the concentration camps at the Pharmacy under the Eagle.
