The Archcathedral Basilica of St. Peter and Paul in the western Polish city of Poznan is one of the oldest churches in the country and the oldest known Polish cathedral, dating back from the 10th century.

Located on the island of Ostrow Tumski in the northeast section of the city center, it was one of the first main political centers in the early Polish state, and included a ducal palace that was recently excavated by archeologists in 1999.  The first constructed church on the site was believed to have survived for about seventy years and was rebuilt after 1038 in a Romanesque style, with its remains still visible today.  By the 15th century, the church was rebuilt in a gothic style, with a crown of chapels added and it wasn’t until a fire in 1622 that the church was rebuilt once again, but this time in a Baroque style.

The cathedral is the place of burial for many of Poland’s notable leaders, including Mieszko, Boleslaus the Brave, Casimir the Restorer.  Guided tours in English are available upon request.
