If you are looking to get some history in during your trip to Warsaw (clearly you didn’t just come to this Polish capital for the nightclubs, right?), then Pawiak Prison might be a point of interest for you.  Also known as Wiezienie Pawiak, it was built in the 1830s and served as a Tsarist prison before it became a Gestapo-operated prison during World War II.

Pawiak Prison is the largest political prison in Poland, having seen over 100,000 inmates during its prime.  These days Pawiak is a memorial to those who perished inside with a museum that exhibits haunting photo displays, prisoners’ belongings and reconstructed cells (think Alcatrez). It is also a center that serves as a Holocaust education and archive research center.

The prison is located on Dzielna Street and is open from Wednesdays to Sundays from 10:00am to 4:00pm (take the Nowolipki train).  Admission is free.  For more information, contact +44 22 831 92 89.
