While many tourists flock to Western Europe to climb the Alps, Zakopane and the Tatra Mountains are really a hidden gem in the southern part of Poland that is yet to reach its full potential as a great winter tourist town. Many expert climbers from across Europe come to Zakopane to climb in the high Tatras, with visitor numbers increasing every year.
There are excellent mountaineering opportunities, with Morskie Oko being a typical starting point with the Gubalowka-Koscielisko trail (running 4.52 miles) being the best route for mid-level climbers and the Hala Gasienicowa (16.85 miles) for those looking for more of a challenge. Wrota Chalubinskiego is another difficult route (14.2 miles) in the area.
Serious climbers who visit the area can download guides, including a detailed map, description and points of interest usually for a small fee to your iPhone or Android smartphones to help with your climb.
