This garden came in to being between 1771 and 1774. Moreover, it was integrated into ‘Natural History Museum’ that was established by ‘Marquis of Pombal’. The 1st part, that stands at Garden’s highest level and top of valley goes on to constitute formal area. Plus, it has been divided in to terraces. ‘Quadrado Central’ is the name given to the ‘lower terrace’. It’s the garden’s most primitive portion. A fountain dating back to 1940s is contained over here. Certain trees planted at that time include Erythrina crista-galli, Cunninghamia sinesis, and Cryptomeria japonica.
The 2nd portion includes a valley where a petite stream flowed once upon a time. It’s the ‘Arboretum’, generally called ‘Mata’ of the above-mentioned Botanical Garden. This place witnesses a superb forest of ‘bamboo’; along with dense vegetation on the part of exotic trees.
