Cristo-Rei
Cristo-Rei can be described as one of the Catholic monuments overlooking Lisbon. It had been inspired from Christ the Redeemer statue situated in ‘Rio de Janeiro’ (Brazil). The inauguration took place on 17th of May, 1959. At that time, the country, i.e. Portugal had been ruled by ‘dictator Antonio de Oliveira Salazar’. Furthermore, it had been by command of his that construction of Cristo-Rei took place.
This monument had been constructed on Tagus River’s left-bank; facing the capital on other bank. The base of this monument is in form of gate; standing around 75 meters tall. At the ‘top’, the statue of ‘Christ’ is located. It has been designed by Francisco Franco de Sousa, the world-renowned sculptor. At this statue’s base, there is an ‘observation deck’. It goes on to provide panoramic views with regards to Lisbon.
