The Shrine of Mother Mary at Fátima attracts many who seek a spiritual experience. It is here that the Mother appeared to three children on 13 May 1917, and also on a few other occasions. Another region of immense tourist popularity is Algarve.
The country’s largest collection of roman ruins can be found at Conímbriga, which also boasts one of Portugal’s finest museums. The beautiful Monastery of Batalha is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Capture the view from Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of Portugal and of the European continent as a whole. Another tourist attraction is the sixteenth century Igreja de São Roque, a Jesuit church with an interior blended in gold, marble and canvassed walls. Lavish religious items and rich olden paintings can be observed at the nearby Museo de São Roque.
One can revisit the past at the castle-like Torre de Belém, which was the starting point of explorer Vasco da Gama’s historical journey into the New World.
