Beja is an old town located in the south-eastern region of Portugal and is the capital of Beja District. It is of historical significance because it was an important part of the Moors Empire, which has left its mark on the town in the form of remarkable Moorish architecture that is found in the whitewashed houses and town streets. Owing to its location atop a hill, in Beja, one can get a good view of the Baixo Alentejo Plains.
The heat is particularly strong in July and August with temperatures crossing 30°C. The remaining months of the year are cooler with moderate temperatures. Beja is at its coolest with maximum rainfall during December and January.
The total population of the town is nearly 35,000 people. The main occupation of the inhabitants is farming.
