For a small town, Beja has quite a few attractions. The thirteenth-century castle which is located atop a hill can be seen even before entering the town. A part of the castle is now a military museum.
Adjacent to the castle is the Church of Santa Amaro, which is one of the oldest churches still existing in Portugal and is a beautiful example of Visigoth architecture.
Prepare to be impressed with the beautiful collection of Spanish, Portuguese and Flemish art at the Museu da Rainha D. Leonor, which was formally a convent for the Order of the Poor Ladies. Some of the helpful locals will tell you the tale of the famous Five Love Letters of a Portuguese Nun who had stayed in the convent in the seventeenth century. The story has now become a stage play entitled ‘Cartas’.
When in town, don’t forget to taste the cheese and sausage dish, which will leave you with even fonder memories of Beja.
