Braga is capital of ‘district of Braga’; i.e. the most ancient archidiocese. It’s also one amongst the main cities within Portugal.
Braga is the 7th biggest municipality all over Portugal; just after Lisbon, Sintra, Oporto, Loures, and Cascais municipality. This includes parishes of Braga and its suburbs. As such, Braga municipality has around 62 parishes. It’s also center of Greater Metropolitan Area of Minho.
Under Roman Empire, this place was called Bracara Augusta. It had been capital of Gallaecia then. Urban region goes on to extend between river Cavado and river Este. This place is being serviced by fast and regional trains to Lisbon and Porto. Oporto lies at the distance of 53 Km from Braga.
Braga had been inhabited since the pre-historic era. In Iron Age, Bracari people went on to occupy this area.
