Evora is located in the central regions of southern Portugal. This ancient city, founded before the advent of the first millennium, is about 100 km away from the Portuguese capital of Lisbon and is located at a high altitude.
The city is unique as it was put on the world heritage list by UNESCO because of its religious and historical significance stretching back over 2,000 years ago. It is a maze of monuments built in different architectural styles, and parts of the city are still surrounded by ancient walls.
The city experiences a Mediterranean climate with hot summers (temperatures crossing 40°C on the hottest days) and rare showers, and cold, windy winters. The annual average rainfall is about 600 mm.
Evora has a population of more than 50,000 people. The city has good bus services to other Portuguese cities.
