Try the Portuguese favourites Bacalhau (salt-cod) and Porco à alentejana (pork marinated with red peppers and garlic). The national dish is Caldo Verde, (a soup with potatoes, onions, garlic and slices of sausage); the national pastry is Pasteis de Nata (filled with custard and topped with sugar and cinnamon).

Portugal is the home of the world-famous port wines and the equally popular Madeira variety. Be it red or white, wine is a staple drink of the land.
