Not many people know that the international football player Cristiano Ronaldo was born in Funchal. Many football lovers consider it a sort of pilgrimage when visiting the birthplace of one of football’s biggest stars.
The city is also home to the Sé Cathedral, a Manueline-style masterpiece with an entirely wooden ceiling. The Palace of São Pedro is an impressive eighteenth century structure, which houses among others the Municipal Museum and the Funchal Aquarium.
Move around the city with the help of Carros de Cesta (basketwork frame toboggans) and Carre de Bois (ox drawn carriages) as they are handy means of transport and, more importantly, heritage objects that attract tourists.
When in town, don’t forget to visit Monte parish, which is around 9 km away from the city centre. The 1,000 hectare Ecological Park of Funchal and the lively Festival of Nossa Senhora do Monte (held every year on 14 August) makes Monte a must-visit.
