Cristo Rei is a statue situated across the Tagus River from Lisbon. It was built by the citizens as thanks to God, when they were grateful that Portugal didn’t join the fight in World War II. This beautiful statue is a miniature replica of the Statue of Christ, the Redeemer on Corcovado in Rio de Januiero in Brazil. This historic monument was built in the year 1959 and is 90 feet tall. The figure of Christ opens his arms to Lisbon and there is also a comprehensive view of the Lisbon city and 25 de Abril Bridge from the top of the 270 feet high pedestral, which can be reached easily by an elevator.
