The St. George's Castle is visible from a long way and dates back to an Iron Age settlement, occupied by the Romans in 205 BC. It is a 110 meters and 361 feet high hill on which the castle stands and constitutes the central starting point of the development of Lisbon. It served as a Moorish royal residence until the first king of Portugal captured it in 1147. It was dedicated to St. George, the patron saint of England.
