The Artes Decorativas Portuguesas is a brilliant museum and school of decorative arts in Lisbon, Portugal. It is operated by the Fundação Ricardo do Espírito Santo Silva and displays a wide range of 15th- to 19th-century exhibits including furniture, textiles, jewellery, silverware and porcelain. The setting is an aristocratic 18th-century palace with large majestic rooms.
The particularly interesting thing about it is that it is also a school, and the general public can get involved with this side of things through workshops held intermittently, where artisans practise traditional wood carving, metalwork, decorative painting and more. Call ahead for precise scheduling, timing and costs.
The Museum can be found at Largo das Portas do Sol 2 Alfama, most easily reached from Belem station, and is open 10:00-17:00 Tue-Sun.
