The Museu do Fado or the Fado Museum is a modern museum (1998) dedicated to the portugese guitar and Fado, which is a Portugese musical genre that traces its roots to the early 1820s and is characterized by mournful tunes and lyrics, often about the sea or the life of the poor. There are two main varieties of fado, namely those of the cities of Lisbon and Coimbra. The Lisbon style is the most popular, while Coimbra's is the more classic style.
The Museum is located in the Alfama neighbourhood in the capital city of Lisbon. It has a permanent exhibition space for temporary exhibitions, a documentation center, a theme store, an auditorium, a restaurant and the Museum School, where courses are given on Portuguese guitar and viola of Fado, and where you can attend a seminar for songwriters. The Museum is open to the public from Tuesday to Sunday between 10.00 and 18.00 (last admission 17.30), and can be found at No. 1 inside the Fountain Square.
