For all those interested in military paraphernalia, military hardware no-less, and on a grand scale, the Museu Militar de Lisboa (Military Museum of Lisbon) must be a destination of great import. Located on the site of a 16th-century shipyard, this museum has an artillery collection that is said to be the world's biggest, and extensive displays of guns, pistols and swords and even a 14th century cannon.

The most famous exhibit though is a little more modest but in terms of historical interest and pure historicity Vasco da Gama's sword is hard to beat. The museum has a dedicated permanent display room related to his life and exploits with murals depicting the discovery of the sea route to India. Amongst other exhibits of interest first floor displays of World War I exhibits are particularly good.

To get here head for the Alfama area which can be reached either on foot or by bus 28. It is open between 10AM-5PM (Closed on Sundays and Mondays).
