The Portugese have a tradition regarding beaches: to be there at every opportunity. Though the water off the beaches in the vicinity of Lisbon is not as warm as that found in the south there are still many good reasons to spend time here. Most of Lisbon’s beaches proudly display the Union Blue flag for excellence and many of them have beautiful sand, and even more importantly, a great atmosphere and facilities.
Praia da Adraga was named as one of Europe’s best beaches by the BBC for its dual qualities of beautifully unspoiled blue waters and surrounding dramatically steep cliffs. It can be found only 15km north of Guincho, close to Sintra.
Ericeira is quaint village found 54km from Lisbon, surrounded by several beautiful beaches on the Atlantic Ocean. One of the best is Ribeira das Ilhas, one of Europe’s best surfing spots. (Since 1985 it has beach has been hosting World Surfing Championships)
