Whether you’re in Lisbon for the weekend or for a much longer period you can find exactly what you’re looking for in terms of nightlife if you know where to look in this abundant and sometimes crazy scene. And the thing about it is that its cheap!
The most unique aspect of the scene in Lisbon and in Portugal in general has to be Fado the traditional folk music style which uses string instruments including the Portugese guitar and viola. Its an interesting and still vibrant musical tradition that can trace its roots back at least as far as the 1820s and likely much much further into local antiquity. You can find your own enigmatic little Fado scene in many many of the bars around the city just listen out and follow the advice of locals.
For those who are looking for a more typical night its a good idea to start off in the cafés of Chiado, which serve as meeting points for the locals before heading to a restaurant for a long, relaxed dinner in the Bairro Alto quarter. After this the action begins down by the river on the docks of Alcântara and the district of Santos, where can be found the fashionable and big-time clubs.
