Alcantara is a civil parish of the city and municipality of Lisbon. Its name has been derived from the Arabic word ‘al-Qantara which means a bridge.
Earlier it was only a suburb of Lisbon mostly farms and castles, but by the 19th century it became a industrial area and it had factories and warehouses. In the beginning of 1990 it was filled with pubs and clubs and it changed the area forever: it is now one of the main centers for entertainment.
In ancient times, evidence of human occupation and this also showed signs of Neolithic and Chalcolithic.
