Sao Joao de Deus is a neighbourhood or parish in the municipal city of Lisbon, Portugal. Named after St John (“Saint John of God”) it has is made up of an area of only 0.90 km ² and has 10,782 inhabitants according to a 2001 census.
It is a lovely area to walk around and in truth one of the best spots in the city for a quiet day out of the main thoroughfares, perhaps with a good book and several coffees along the way. Cafes, patisseries and restaurants are present and welcome amongst the heritage of the streets and provide a range of cuisines and atmospheres that should be enough to satisfy most of us.
The main attraction to this place is of course the Church of St John of God itself. Located near the square of London it was designed by the architect Antonio Lino and is a strikingly imagined white building that dominates the immediately surrounding area.
