The Ribeira is the medieval old town which offers Porto city its distinctive look from the Douro River. In 1996, it was declared as a UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) World Heritage Site. This neighborhood consists of old buildings which are vividly painted and strikingly decorated. There are several cafes and outdoor eating venues in this neighborhood, where one can relax alongside the river. It has narrow streets and dark arcades, and during night time, it is lively as it is most sought after space in the city.
