Monastery of Jesus
Monastery of Jesus is amongst the major historical monuments of Setubal. It’s the building in Manueline style; i.e. Portuguese version relating to ‘late Gothic’.
The church of ‘Monastery of Jesus’, constructed in a 20-year span, i.e. from 1490 to 1510; is an important monument of architecture of Portugal, as it’s the earliest-known construction wherein aspects of decoration of Manueline style had been employed.
The church’s south façade, which faces ‘Jesus’ Square’, is the major façade of building. Having viewed from square, this church goes on to combine 2 distinct volumes: a ‘polygonal apse’, and a ‘rectangular nave’; located at building’s ‘East end’. The façade’s western side houses a ‘bell tower’. As such, it’s an amazing thing to look at!
