Tavira’s collection of around 37 churches gives it the title of the ‘town of churches’. Of particular importance is the church of Santa Maria do Castelo, which used to be the site of a mosque before. The tomb of the town’s founder Dom Paio Peres Correia and his seven knights is here.
The town’s different architectural patterns can be observed as you walk through its streets. Gothic-type houses can be found along the Travessa de Dona Brites and the Conceicao de Tavira. The latter has a church containing ancient statues, artefacts and a treasured seventeenth-century silver monstrance.
Indulge in a game of golf at the magnificent Benamor and Colina Verde courses, which lie just outside the town. Tavira is also famous for its collection of stunning beaches. One can head to the famous Ilha Da Tavira, which is just 3 km from the town and is connected to the town by ferry. The beaches at Barril and the unspoilt village of Santa Luzia are also well worth a trip.
