The main square has a sixteenth-century water fountain and the Roman cum Renaissance-styled Misericórdia church. Also visit the Palace of Barbosa Maciel which houses the City Museum.
Gothic-designed relics of the 12 apostles can be found at the Sé Cathedral, while a great view of the city awaits you from the hill of Monte Santa Luzia, which also has a tranquil basilica. You could also take advantage of Lima River’s inviting waters for a spot of sailing, canoeing, fishing or sailing from the Yachting Port.
In May, the Viana do Castelo festival season begins and lasts till August. One of the most important is the three-day Festival of Nossa Senhora D’Agonia (beginning at the eighteenth-century chapel which has the same name).
Before leaving this charming town, don’t forget to take some important souvenirs: decorative filigree jewellery and pottery handicrafts, which are quite famous and available at the market.
