The Biserica Alba, which translates as the White Church is a beautiful, small but enigmatic church in the Romanian capital of Bucharest. Many Bucharest churches are among the oldest and most beautiful buildings in the city and many of them similarly have a very interesting history but the enigma and the continuing interest tourists and visitors tend to find in the little White Church is that its origins and meanings are to this day largely unknown.
The White Church is located at 110 Calea Victoriei and can be reached easily with public transport, on foot or by taxi. What is known about it, is that it’s called The White Church because it was always painted stark white (well yes!). It was built at the beginning of the eighteen century under the guidence of priest Neagu Darvas and has been restored a few times since then. The interior was painted in 1873 by one of Romania’s foremost painters Gheorghe Tattarescu and is reputed to be spectacular!
