ROMANIAN HISTORY NATIONAL MUSEUM
HISTORY, COLLECTIONS The idea of a National Museum dates back to the 19th century when in 1834 Mihai Ghica donated his antiques collection to the National Museum of Natural History and Antiques housed by the Sf. Sava College from Bucharest. It wasn’t easy at all to choose a location for the future museum. Between several possible locations there were the City Hall building and the Law Court Palace but the post Palace was chosen. The Post Palace is a historical building, a remarkable architectural monument of the capital, realized at the end of the 19th century (1889) by the architect Alexandru Săvulescu. The Romanian History National Museum is standing on a place with a very interesting history. In the 18th century there were the estates of Constantin Bălăceanu on which Constantin Brâncoveanu, the ruler of Walachia, built in 1692-1694 an inn named after him - Constantin Vodă Inn. The great fire from 1847 destroyed the inn as well as an important part of the city. The ruins of the inn were demolished in 1862. After almost a decade, in 1871, on the same place, a hall was improvised for circus and theatre spectacles. Famous actors from that time, like Matei Millo and Grigore Manolescu performed on that scene. Tha hall of Shur Circus was demolished in 1877 and transformed into a square named Constantin Vodă. On this place the officials decided to raise the Post Palace which’s construction began in 1894 and it was inaugurated in 1900. Realized after the plans of architect Alexandru Săvulescu, the building is conceived in neoclassical stile with the main façade having stairs on all its length and a porch sustained by 10 Doric columns. The extremities are raised and covered with a cupola. The central post office functioned here until 1970 when renovation works for the future museum began.
