The Kremlin

The Kremlin, a fortified complex in Moscow, includes palaces and cathedrals.

Inhabited since the second millennium BC, the site was earlier called the ‘Grad of Moscow’. The Kremlin walls and towers were built in the sixteenth century, the highest tower being the Spasskaya. Today, the complex serves as the official residence of the Russian President.

The most central and notable structure is the Cathedral Square which is surrounded by six buildings, three of which are cathedrals named, the Cathedral of the Dormition, the Cathedral of the Annunciation and the Cathedral of the Archangel Michael.

Visitors should also not miss the Great Bell Tower of Ivan which interestingly resembles a burning candle. The main feature of the tower is the twenty one bells used as an alarm in the olden days. The Palace of Facets is another fascinating structure.
