Smolny Cathedral was at first intended to be the central church of a monastery and was built to house Elizabeth, the daughter of Peter the Great. It was after she was disallowed to take the throne and was opted instead to become a nun. However, after her Imperial ancestor was overthrown during a revolution which was carried out by the royal guards, she decided to forget the idea of a monastic life and accepted the throne. At present, this cathedral is used as concert hall.
