St. Petersburg was created by Peter the Great; the first emperor of Russia. The city is made up of more than 20 Islands and separated by around 40 rivers and canals.
It is said to be amongst the most beautiful cities of the world and hence is also called the Venice of the North. In the months of May, June and July the sun never goes down, giving this period the term of 'White Nights'.
During the 'White Nights', many bridges are raised to allow passage to ships. The 'White Days' are also just as spectacular, as the city glistens in snow and the rivers freeze.
For more than 200 years St. Petersburg was the Russian capital and many Emperors of the Romanov Dynasty are now buried in the Peter-and-Paul Fortress.
The Hermitage is one of the most famous museums, hosting the largest collection of art in the world. St. Isaac's Cathedral is one of the many beautiful cathedrals and is particularly famous for having the forth largest dome in the world.
