Kosice is a major hub of industry, commerce, science and culture in Eastern Slovakia. The historic centre of the city has been declared an Urban Heritage Area and contains many historic buildings and monuments.
The city’s oldest architectural landmark is the St. Elizabeth’s Cathedral; a magnificent example of Gothic architecture that was built in 1378. The St. Michael’s Chapel located nearby is another awe inspiring edifice. Other buildings of interest in this historic city include the Forgach Palace and the Eastern-Slovakia Museum.
Košice also plays host to the oldest marathon in Europe: the Peace Marathon. This event is held on the first Sunday in the month of October every year. The marathon is accompanied by many celebrations and festivities all over the city.
The picturesque Hradova Hill to the north of the city is a popular place for outings and is also home to several rare plants.
