Bohinj is truly a paradise on earth. People started settling here 2500 years ago approximately, nestled in the foothills of the Julian Alps and the Triglav Mountain ( Highest peak in Slovenia), it attracts with the mesmerizing beauty of the lake and the excellant hospitality of the villagers. Basically a scattered village in the vicinity of Bled town and can be reached from every point of Slovenia . Though a remote destination , the connectivity is excellant.
Reaching there:
Bohinj can be reached very easily from Ljubliana, Trieste,Vienna. Daily flights ply to Ljubliana from UK.
Or else, one can always have the option to fly to Venice or Trieste and take a train to Gorizia. From Gorizia, a city bus ( Number 1) takes you to the border of Slovenia, where just across the strret lies the Slovenian Station Nova Goricia. You get a train from Nova Goricia to Bohinj Bistrica. Adding to the beauty of the surroundings, the prime attraction of this narrow guage railway is the Bohinj Tunnel which was ceremoniously opened in 1906 and became the main connectivity source between Trieste ( the then most important port of the Austrio-Hungarian empire) and Central Europe. Tickets are easily available on the train .
Else you can always take a bus from Ljubliana, or even trieste. A taxi from Ljubliana cost you only 60-70 euros!!Cheap, isn't it??
Getting around:
Bohinj , as said before is a scattered settlement. You would get very few taxis to move around, though the bar owners or even the tourist office helps you in calling them...else there is a airport bus which moves all around the villages and the prime attractions and ofcourse regularly ply between Bled , Bohinj and Ljubliana.
Food:
The prime concern is the apatite, you get some excellant game meat!! if you are lucky. The main restaurants are located in Ribcev Laz, Stara Fuzina and to try some good traditional food you must walk to Srednja Vas.
To substitute, pizzas, pastas and spaghettis along with hot dogs and burgers are always there to tempt your tongues. Specifically , do not forget the servings of trout ( fresh from the Bohinj lake) and a typical slovenian dessert ( Struchle)...restaurants to name a few are the inhouse restaurants of Hotel Jezero and Hotel Bohinj, Triglav residence. If you wish to cook yourself, each village has a supermarket ( or else can always pick up your ration from Bistrica)

All around the villages are apartments that you can rent through the official website of slovenia or any portals. The star catagory hotels either in Stara Fuzina or Ribcev Laz, to the vicinity of the Bohinj Lake. Bohinj Bistrica also have some good hotels like The Park, or else you can choose to stay in some guest houses in the vicinity of the Triglav National Park.
Sightseeing :
Being an extremely picturesque destination, the attractions lies in the scenic beauty of the village. Lies just in Ribcev Laz is the old church, which is also the main landmark of Bohinj. You can take the bus to Slap Savca ( the cascade at the mouth of Bohinj River ) or take a ride on the Vogel Cable car ( you need to check the operating times with the tourist office at Ribcev Laz)....but strolling around the Lake is a wonderfull experience with its crystal clear gurgling waters...If weather permits, also a boat ride in the lake adds charm to your experience.
Time to go :
Summers are excellant with bright sun overhead, but the hotels are usually full, so it is always better to do the bookings before you go. Activities include boating, swimming, trekks in the foothills of the triglav and walks in the national park. Autumn is usually the lean season, the villages are void of tourist and might look a bit deserted with mild snowfalls and showers throughout the day, but winters are very enjoyable here with the Kobel ski resort at its vicinity.
General Tips :
There are quite a few souvenir shops througout.
The shops and markets usually closed half a day on saturdays with sundays full off.
In winters only a few reastaurants are open with very selective cuisines.
Timeber lumbering being the main industry, you get beautiful souvenirs carved out from Timber scraps.
