| The Mezquita, or ‘mosque’, is a Roman Catholic Cathedral in Cordoba, Spain. |
| Attractions |
The Mezquita was completed over a span of 200 years; Abd ar-Rehman I, the first Muslim emir, supervised the construction himself in the initial stages. The emir named the building after his wife. Initially, the Mezquita was a pagan temple built by the Romans; then, it became a church, followed by a mosque. At present, it is a Roman Catholic Cathedral.
The lofty arches of the structure are the centre of attraction here, and the columns supporting them are made of jasper, onyx, marble and granite. The ceiling of the Mihrab has been carved out from a single block of marble and decorated with mosaics of gold. The other attractions include the Bell Tower, the Entrance Gates and the Bells of Santiago. One can get an excellent view of the Cordoba from atop the Bell Tower. |
