Merida can be described as capital city of Extremadura, an autonomous community with regards to Spain.
Merida had been founded in 25 BC. It was named ‘Emerita Augusta’ then. Emperor Augustus was the one to order his army to establish this location; with the objective of protecting a bridge and pass over Guadiana River.
Merida, at the time of Visigothic period, had maintained splendor and grandeur to much an extent. It was under 6th-century domination of bishops then; and capital of ‘Hispania’. A lot of wealth was brought by Bishop Paul; thereby having made it the richest one in Spain.
Puento Romano is amongst the oldest Roman monuments of Merida. Also, one would find a bridge across Guadiana River which is in to use by pedestrians till date. It’s also amongst the ‘longest’ existing Roman Bridges all over the US.
Population of Merida has been estimated to be 55568.
