Lerida, officially known as Lleida, is the capital of the province of Lerida. Situated in the county of Sergia, Lerida is located in Spain. With a population of around 124,700 inhabitants, Lerida is the main cultural centre of Catalonia.
The city has a Mediterranean climate, characterised by warm summers, very little rain and fog. Droughts are prominent during the summer months.
The earliest inhabitants of Lerida were the Ilergetes, who were members of the Iberian tribe. The area was soon conquered by the Romans and then, by the Saracens. In the nineteenth century, the city suffered great losses during the Napoleonic Invasion and the Spanish Civil War.
Services and the agro-food sector account for a majority of the economy. Tourism is an equally important money-earning sector.
