The City of Madrid is known for its lively nightlife. The Glorieta de Bilbao, Plaza de Santa Bárbara and Alonso Martínez are known for its pubs, bars, ice-cream parlours and restaurants. The bars in the vicinity of Moncloa and Arguelles are generally frequented by the younger crowd and university students.
Malasaña has numerous bars and cafes with live music and moderately-priced restaurants. The disco-pubs in town are basically pubs with a small dance floor. These pubs serving beers and ‘copas’ remain open until 6 or 7 in the morning. The famous discos are Palacio Gaviria and Joy Eslava on Arenal Street, Kapital in Calle Atocha, Pachá in Barceló Street and Empire in the Paseo de Recoletos.
The Palacio Gaviria arranges special nights for foreigners while the gay pubs and discos can be found in the Chueca area. Most of the discotheques have an admission charge and gaining entry is often difficult if one does not look trendy or cool enough. A dress code exists at many discos as well.
