The Royal Palace of Madrid, or Palacio Real, located on Bailén Street, is the official residence of the King of Spain.

The royal family does not reside in the palace, however, it is still used for state occasions.

The palace stretches over an area of 135,000 square meters and has more than 2,800 rooms. Several royal collections of great historical importance are kept at the palace and these include the Royal Armoury and weapons dating back to the 13th century.

The palace is also richly decorated by artists such as Juan de Flandes, Caravaggio, Velázquez, Tiepolo, Mengs, Gasparini and Goya.

The Royal Palace is surrounded by the gardens of the Campo del Moro to the west, Plaza de Oriente and the Teatro Real opera-house to the east, Plaza de la Armas to the south and the Jardines de Sabatini (Sabatini Gardens) to the north.

The wedding of Prince Felipe and Letizia Ortiz took place in the central courtyard of the Palace on 22 May 2004.

The palace remains open to the public but closes during state functions and official government receptions.
