The Plaza Mayor is a central plaza in the city of Madrid, Spain.

The centre of the square is occupied by a Statue of Philip III.

The Plaza Mayor is rectangular in shape and is surrounded by three-story residential buildings having 237 balconies that face the Plaza which has a total of nine entranceways. The plaza has been considered the focal point of the city where royal coronations, bullfights and even the inquisition took place.

La Real Casa de Panadería was the first building to be constructed in the square. The building is now home to the municipal city council.

The Plaza is also dotted with numerous street cafés and restaurants. The square becomes an important venue for traders and buyers of old coins and stamps, especially on Sundays.

The square also gets transformed into a huge Christmas market, during Christmas where different kinds of decorations and religious statutes can be bought.
