The Prado, meaning ‘meadow’ in Spanish, was built under the reign of Charles the Third. The museum of Prado is renowned for its collection of some of the finest art works in the world. Most of the paintings are as old as the twelfth century. Apart from the numerous paintings and sculptures, the museum houses more than 5,000 drawings, 2,000 prints, 1,000 coins and medals. The works are by some of the greatest artists like Diego Velazquez, Botticelli, Rembrandt and many more.
‘Las Meninan’ by Velazquez is the best work that is housed in the museum. The museum, designed by Villanueva, has several other attractions like the Botanical Gardens, the Observatory and the Retiro Park. The façade of the museum is decorated beautifully with exquisite sculptures. |
