Construction of the cathedral began in the early 1400s to highlight Seville’s prosperity. The sheer size and splendour of the cathedral make it stand out from all other cathedrals in Europe. It was built as a tribute to the grandeur of Seville.
As the cathedral was built upon the ruins of a mosque, many columns and elements from the mosque have been included. An example of this is the Giralda, originally a minaret, now converted in to a bell tower. It is Seville’s most popular symbol.
Visitors will enjoy the interiors of the place with the longest nave in the country embellished with gold. Apart from that, it also has the largest altarpiece in the world with some of the finest examples of Gothic woodcarving. Also, jewellery items, paintings and sculptures are housed here. |
