General Tips
Settling & Living in Spain
Author: Linda De Santis
Rating:

The decision to move to Spain should be made in a well-informed manner. Spain is definitely a wonderful country, but it also has its drawbacks. The slower pace of life, for example, while relaxing, can also be a source of frustration; it takes longer to get things done in general.

Sunny weather shouldn’t be the only thing drawing you to the country. This said, Spain has many positive characteristics that account for the thousands of foreigners that decide each year to move to the country on a permanent or seasonal basis.

Finding a house :

It’s not complicated to purchase property in Spain; foreigners can get loans from most Spanish banks, which offer lower interest rates than most European countries. There are a few technicalities like getting an NIE (Foreigner’s Identification Number) that have to get taken care of but buying Spanish property is by no means difficult.

The condition of real estate in Spain has changed recently, returning to more sustainable levels as the country comes out of a powerful ten-year boom. Homes in Spain are still in high demand, however, especially by foreigners in search of a second or holiday Spanish property. Spain is expected to retain a healthy real estate market due to its lasting appeal as a place to vacation and retire in.

Because of this, there is no lack of services for foreigners shopping for Spanish property. The most important factors in searching for a home in Spain are finding a reputable and trustworthy estate agent and securing a good loan from a Spanish bank.

Learning Spanish :

If you don’t already speak the language, consider taking a Spanish course in Spain. Although in certain communities its actually possible to live without speaking a word of Spanish (such as in much of the Costa del Sol) this is obviously not a good way to come into contact with Spain’s wonderful and inviting culture.

Language courses in Spain are available at universities and private schools throughout the country. Thousands of students each year choose to study Spanish in Salamanca University, for example, because of the quality of its Spanish courses and its reputation as a one of Spain’s most prestigious institutions.

Certainly with time and practice you’ll begin to pick up on the language, but the best way to learn the language fluently is by establishing a good foundation through a Spanish language course. Spain will become much more accessible and enjoyable once you have this key to communication.
